Citation Details
Three steps
How to use the Turabian citation generator
- Select the source type. Choose Website, Book, Journal, Newspaper, or YouTube and enter the details printed on or supplied by the source.
- Generate the paired output. The first result is a full note for the source’s first citation; the second is the corresponding bibliography entry.
- Place and verify. Put the note text in a numbered footnote or endnote, alphabetize the bibliography entry by surname, and check every element before submission.
Supported output
Turabian 9 Notes and Bibliography only
The Turabian manual presents two Chicago-style citation systems. Notes and Bibliography is common in history, literature, and the arts; Author-Date is more common in the sciences. This generator produces Notes and Bibliography output only. It does not generate Turabian Author-Date parenthetical citations or an author-date reference list.
A raised number in the paper points to a footnote or endnote. The full first note normally presents the author in natural order and separates major elements with commas. The bibliography usually inverts the first author’s name and separates major elements with periods. Because those two records serve different purposes, do not paste the note into the bibliography unchanged.
The form formats manually entered details for five source types and does not perform automatic URL, DOI, ISBN, or title lookup. Use the official Turabian Citation Quick Guide to confirm the assigned system, then compare the generated pair with its Notes and Bibliography examples.
Worked example
Turabian book note and bibliography example
This invented book demonstrates the punctuation and name-order difference. A specific page belongs in the note; a whole-book bibliography entry normally omits that pinpoint page.
Full first note: 1. Maya Chen, Social Life in Coastal Cities (New York: Example Press, 2024), 47.
Bibliography: Chen, Maya. Social Life in Coastal Cities. New York: Example Press, 2024.
Accuracy method
Turabian checks, repeat citations, and limits
- Later citations: after the full first note, create a shortened note using the author’s surname, a shortened title, and a page when relevant.
- Note numbering: number notes consecutively across the paper. A single-source generator cannot know the final number assigned in your document.
- Journal articles: cite the specific page in the note, but include the article’s full page range in the bibliography; prefer a DOI URL when available.
- Online sources: record a publication or revision date when supplied; when no date exists, an access date may be needed.
- Multiple authors: check name order and the different truncation rules for notes and bibliographies before submitting a long author list.
- Local requirements: an instructor or dissertation office may override paper-format details, so treat the generated citation as a draft to verify.
FAQ
Turabian citation questions
Which Turabian system does this generator support?
It supports Turabian 9 Notes and Bibliography, producing a full first note and a matching bibliography entry.
Does it generate Turabian Author-Date citations?
No. Although the official manual also describes Author-Date, that system is outside this page’s current output.
Can I reuse the full note every time?
Use the full note for the first citation, then prepare a shortened note for later citations unless your instructor gives different directions.
Does the generator manage footnote numbers automatically?
No. Your word processor and the order of citations in your paper determine the final note numbers.
