Three steps

How to use the ASA citation generator

  1. Choose the source type. Select Website, Book, Journal, Newspaper, or YouTube, then enter the bibliographic details shown by the source.
  2. Generate both parts. Review the author-date citation for your text and the matching entry for the alphabetical reference list.
  3. Check the evidence. Confirm author names, year, title, journal or publisher, volume, issue, pages, DOI, and URL before adding the citation to your paper.

ASA author-date format for sociology

ASA style places an author’s surname and publication year in the text, normally without a comma: (Chen 2024). Add a colon and page number for a quotation or specific passage, as in (Chen 2024:47). Each citation points to a full reference arranged alphabetically by the first author’s surname.

This page targets the American Sociological Association author-date system, not APA or a generic Harvard variant. The form formats manually entered websites, books, journal articles, newspaper articles, and YouTube videos. It does not search by title, DOI, or ISBN, and it cannot decide whether a source is credible or complete.

  • Authors: preserve the published order and enter full names when the source supplies them.
  • Journal articles: verify the journal title, volume, issue, full article page range, and persistent identifier.
  • Online sources: record the responsible person or organization, date, title, site, and stable URL.

For the governing edition, consult the official ASA Style Guide, Seventh Edition. The current American Sociological Review submission guidelines also summarize core citation and reference-list rules.

Worked example

ASA journal citation example

The source below is illustrative. Its structure shows the year after the authors, quotation marks around the article title, and the volume, issue, and article pages after the journal title.

Accuracy method

ASA checks, edge cases, and limits

  • Three authors: name all three in the first text citation, then use the first surname plus “et al.” later.
  • Four or more authors: use the first surname plus “et al.” in text, but list every author in the reference entry.
  • Direct quotation: place the page after the year with a colon, not a comma.
  • Same author and year: distinguish works with letters such as 2024a and 2024b in both locations.
  • Missing date: use “n.d.” only when the source truly supplies no publication date, then verify the treatment required for that source type.
  • Final review: compare spelling, capitalization, page ranges, and links with the publisher record; generated punctuation cannot repair incorrect input.
